Smithsonian Environmental Research Center Fall/Winter 2013-14 Public Programs


Public programs are designed for individuals and families.  Additional programs are available for schools and organized groups.  Check our website at www.serc.si.edu for a list of age-appropriate environmental education programs, information about trails, and upcoming events.  For information about organized group programs call (443) 482.2388; for school groups call (443) 482.2216. 
All programs meet at the Reed Education Center and are free unless otherwise stated. Directions to SERC can be found online at www.serc.si.edu. Preregistration is required for some of the programs. You may register online with a Visa or MasterCard at http://serc.si.edu . SERC is a wildlife conservation area and pets are not allowed on the research campus. There is no food available on the SERC campus.

Canoe Trips
Canoe Excursions
Saturdays, September 7th & 21st, October 3rd & 19th (9-11:30 am)
Paddle along the shores of Muddy Creek and the Rhode River to learn about one of the many tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay. We’ll look for wildlife, eagles, shorebirds, reptiles, and more. This trip is designed for beginning and intermediate paddlers. Basic instruction will be given at the start of the program.  Cost is $16 per adult and $8 for children 6-12 years old; limited to 18 participants. Preregistration is required online at http://serc.si.edu .

Puddle Stompers Pre-K Programs (Parent/Grandparent and Child)
These programs are for children ages 3-5 yrs and their parents or grandparents. All classes are $8 a student which includes a materials fee. Siblings are $4 a student (sibling ages 1-2 yrs. or 6+ yrs.).  Registration is online only at http://serc.si.edu . Classes are limited to 18 students per session. 
All classes meet on THIURSDAYS. The same class is offered at two different times on the same day,
9:30-10:30 am and 11 am-Noon.

September 5th- Patterns in Nature: Nature is constructed on the basis of recurring patterns. Children will learn the main types of patterns found in nature and we’ll take a trip outside to look for rings, swirls, branching, squiggles, and more.
September 19th- Honey Bees: Fall provides a second honey flow for bees. We’ll learn all about how bees make honey and the inside working of hives.
October 19th- Spiders: Come learn about the different types of spiders, from web builders to hunting and jumping spiders. We’ll go on a spider web hunt outside too.
October 17th- Owls: Learn all about owls and their adaptations for hunting. We’ll play some games and then dissect some owl pellets to see what owls eat.
October 31st- Bats: It’s Halloween! Join us for some spooky fun learning all about helpful bats and play some hands-on games.
November 14th- What Happens in Fall?: Let’s explore what happens in fall. We’ll learn why Animals are fattening up, leaves are falling, and acorns are coming down from the trees.
December 12th-Jack Frost: Winter is here, so we’ll learn all about frost and snow then we’ll make our own frost painting to decorate the fridge.
January 16th- Animals That Can Fly: Many animals have wings and can fly or glide. We’ll discover all about these animals from birds and bats to lizards and squirrels.
January 30th- Paws and Claws: Animals have special adaptations to live in their habitats. We’ll learn about the different types of paws and claws that animals have on their feet and then make a fun craft.
February 13th- Walk, Crawl, Slither, Hop: How do animals move? In this fun and high activity class we’ll move and model how animals go about.
February 27th- Ocean Alphabet: Explore the depths of the oceans using the alphabet as a guide!

General Programs

Contee Watershed Trail Hike
Saturday, September 14th (10 am-Noon)
Come join us for a hike through the new watershed trail and to the new overlook. We’ll look at native plants and wildlife along the way. Hike is approx. 1.5 miles over moderate hills and inclines. Suggested for ages 8+. Preregistration is online at http://serc.si.edu, $4 person.

Introduction to Spiders
Saturday, October 19th (10-11 am)
Do you know the difference between hunting and weaving spiders? In this program we will explore some of the unique features of spiders from their hydrostatic skeleton to their multiple eyes and hooked legs; great for all ages. Preregistration is required online at http://serc.si.edu , $4 per person.

Introduction to Bats
Saturday, October 26th (10:30 am-11:30 am)
Bats are one of Maryland’s precious natural resources. They help control mosquito and insect populations. Come learn all about the different types of bats found in Maryland, and their differences and similarities to bats from around the world. Preregistration is required online at http://serc.si.edu , $4 per person.  

Fall Marsh Hike
Saturday, November 9th (10:30 am-Noon)
Join us for a walk through the fall marsh landscape on this beautiful walk through SERC’s trails. We’ll look for color changes and animals that are preparing for fall. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The hike is approximately 1.5 miles. Pre-registration is suggested at http://serc.si.edu, $4 person.
