Calvert Library : created Equal Series

"Created Equal" is part of the Bridging Cultures initiative to encourage public conversation about the changing meanings of freedom and equality in America.

The Created Equal film set and public programs have been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, as part of its Bridging Cultures initiative, in partnership with the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History.  For trailers and full schedule, visit the website.
  
Screening of 
The Loving Story
The moving account of Richard and Mildred Loving, who were arrested in 1958 for violating Virginia's ban on interracial marriage. Their struggle culminated in a landmark Supreme Court decision, Loving v. Virginia (1967) which overturned anti-miscegenation laws in the United States. Screening followed by a short discussion.

Rights, Freedoms & Responsibilities
Rights, Freedoms & Responsibilities: Exploring Our Own Struggles with What "Created Equal" Really Means. Gather for a meal and sharing of experience and perception about inclusion and exclusion in our personal lives and our community. This gathering will be the kickoff session of Defying Definitions, the 2013 Southern Maryland Public Dialogue Project, in partnership with the Maryland Humanities Council and the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights. Funding provided by The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Screening of Freedom Riders
The story behind a courageous band of civil rights activists called the Freedom Riders who in 1961 creatively challenged segregation in the American South. Screening followed by a short discussion. This series is sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
