London Town - Summer Camp

Colonial Adventures!!
Summer Camp 2013
Session 1 – June 24-28
Session 2 – July 15-19

9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Welcome to the world of Colonial Maryland! Colonial Adventures offers children the opportunity to spend part of their summer experiencing colonial life in a hands-on, experience-based environment. If this sounds like just another school field trip with tours and lectures, think again. Your child will live the colonial life dressing in period clothing, hearth cooking their own lunch, learning colonial crafts (including making leather journals, writing with quill pens and more), and playing colonial games and throwing tomahawks. They will even become a pirate for a day-- acquiring a pirate name, searching for buried treasure, and terrorizing the Chesapeake Bay! Through a wide variety of hands-on and experience-based activities they won’t realize they are learning, they’ll just think they’re having fun!

Ages

We welcome all children who will have completed the 1st through 6th grades.

Optional Overnight in the Lord Mayor’s Tenement
For the more adventurous, there will be the option to stay overnight in the Lord Mayor’s Tenement. We will cook our dinner and breakfast on the hearth, sing songs, tell stories, and sleep in a colonial style building. An additional fee will be required.

Celebrate Earth Day with Terra

GFDD and FUNGLODE Mark Earth Day with Screening of Environmental Film Terra

Washington DC, 4/17/2013
On April 22, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) in partnership with the Department of Sustainable Development of the Organization of American States and the Permanent Mission of the Dominican Republic to the OAS cordially invites the audiences to celebrate Earth Day at the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington DC.
Established in 1970, Earth Day has been embraced as a time for introspection, outreach, education and awareness on the state and fate of our planet. Honouring the Earth Day provides every and each of us with a unique opportunity to find ways to change our attitude and behaviour, so as to preserve livelihood on the planet for the current and future citizens. Here, education for sustainable development is critical in order to protect and conserve, and understand that resources are not infinite in our world. In pursue of this goal, on the 2013 Earth Day, GFDD and its partners will come together to raise awareness about education for sustainability.
On this occasion, a film screening, with two more additional screenings at local bilingual schools, will take place at the Art Museum of the Americas. The program will be introduced by GFDD Executive Director Natasha Despotovic and followed by an interactive discussion with Amy Beam, founder of the Beyond the Walls Program (Children and Nature, Mother Nature’s Child), ECPA Fellow, Frank Lowenstein (Climate Adaptation Strategy Leader, Don’t Move Firewood campaign), Executive Producer of the award-winning documentary Lurking in the Trees and Juan Emilio Yanes, Executive Producer of the award-winning film Terra.
TERRA was born to transform children and youth into environmentally sustainable thinkers. It is a short 3D film that showcases the worldwide situation of global warming and environment. Terra has been used as an educational tool on sustainable development reaching out to more than 5,000 Dominican children and youth.
Partners:
Earth Day Network grew out of the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970 and today works with over 22,000 partners in 192 countries to broaden, diversify and mobilize the environmental movement. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.
The Department of Sustainable Development (SEDI) is a structural unit of the Organization of American States that supports OAS member States in the design and implementation of policies, programs and projects oriented to integrate environmental priorities with poverty alleviation, and socio-economic development goals.
Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) was established in 2009 under the initiative of President Obama strengthen Inter-American collaboration on energy security and climate change in the Western Hemisphere. ECPA is comprised of initiatives that focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy poverty, infrastructure, cleaner and more efficient use of fossil fuels, sustainable forests and land use, and climate change adaptation.

Recycling at Home

GFDD and FUNGLODE Presents “Recycling at Home” Workshop during Second Annual Geography Week

Santo Domingo, 4/17/2013
Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) and Fundación Global Democracia y Desarrollo (FUNGLODE) have joined forces with Listin Diario’s Plan Lea this week in celebrating the Second Annual Geography Fair.
In its second consecutive year, the Geography fair will be held from April 17-18th at the Hotel V Centenario, and will provide opportunities for students, teachers and the general public to participate in exhibitions, seminars, lectures and workshops aimed at raising awareness on the interconnectedness of geographic areas while promoting best practices to conserve them.
As part of its program, GFDD/FUNGLODE will be presenting a workshop on April 18th at 3pm entitled “Recycling at Home,” with plastic artist Bertha Santana. The workshop, which forms part of GFDD’s new R3crearte Program, will educate participants on the solid waste problem, promoting the 3Rs concept of solid waste management: reduce, reuse and recycle. The workshop will also emphasize and demonstrate how recycling waste into art can empower individuals and communities alike.
The impetus behind the R3crearte Program arose from the interest sparked among students participating in the Recycled Art Workshop conducted by Bertha Santana, during the II DR Environmental Film Festival (DREFF) in 2012. Through this brand new program, GFDD hopes to engage youth groups and women’s associations into reformulating the way they think about trash.
The R3crearte Program is reflective of DREFF’s overall mission to interact with leading figures in the environmental community and to make a difference at a grassroots level.
The Festival aims to raise awareness and deepen understanding of environmental issues among Dominican audiences. At the same time, DREFF celebrates the beauty and diversity of the Dominican Republic’s natural heritage and offers insights intended to contribute to its appreciation, conservation and sustainable use. The III edition of the DR Environmental Film Festival will take place on September 4-8, 2013.

National Gallery of Art Tours

Did you miss out on one of AAHA's fall or winter NGA Art Tours? Well guess what? Here is one last chance this school year to join us! Please RSVP by Wednesday, April 17 if you would like to join AAHA on April 24 on a 10:00 tour.

The topic?   Every Picture Tells a Story. These tours are inquiry-based rather than lecture-based. The tour will consist of 5 to 6 stops where students will be encouraged to look carefully and discuss works of art. The docent will ask open-ended questions to start the discussion and then add information as the students respond to the works of art. Usually there is a hands on component where the children are asked to sketch.

We will meet in the West Wing Rotunda by the fountain.

Katharine Vincent
AAHA

This tour is designed for 4-6th grade elementary school aged students though interested younger/older siblings are welcome! The NGA expects that as a chaperone you are responsible for the conduct of your child during the tour. As we are trying to create a nurturing art experience for everyone on the tour and respect the museum, if for any reason your child is disruptive on the tour, they may be asked to be excused.

PS. A reminder to mark your calendars: Next AAHA Meeting is May 13th!  Location and subject TBD.

When Birds Collide—Examining Feather Clues to Solve Bird Strike Mysteries
Dr. Carla Dove, National Museum of Natural History
Tomorrow, Wednesday April 17th
Light Refreshments 6:30 pm, Lecture 7-8 pm
Meet at the Schmidt Center
(PDF attached)

Each year bird-aircraft collisions (bird strikes) cause millions of dollars in damage to both civil and military aviation. Since 1990, 172 people have been killed and 176 aircraft have been destroyed as a result of bird strikes, making this a serious human health and safety issue.  Knowing the species of birds that cause damage is a fundamental step in bird strike prevention.

The Smithsonian’s Feather Identification Lab has been identifying birds from these events using techniques of microscopy, DNA, and whole feather analysis for more than 50 years. This presentation will describe the methods used in feather identification process and other research and applied uses of this skill.
