Dr. Chiara Selby - Classes available

Dr. Chiara Selby is offering the following classes at her Cheltenham/Upper Marlboro music studio.  Please contact her with any questions you may have. 


Music History - A comprehensive exploration into the evolution of music history throughout the ages.  Emphasis will be : the identification of musical compositions through abundant listening; examination of associated historic periods, and research into the lives and times of the great composers.  Previous musical experience is not required for this course.

Music Theory, Form and Analysis - An in-depth study of music mathematics, the forms that have been used to create music, and analysis of particular compositions written by the most musically influential composers from past to present.  Enrolled students must have the ability to read music.  Each student will be evaluated prior to enrollment to determine whether their reading skill is at an appropriate level.

Finding Voice - Vocal students will discover their core voice, learn to listen to it and engage with it, generating a repertoire that encourages self-expression with the self-assurance to share it with others.  Finding Voice is a proven method that encourages awareness and confidence.  A wide range of repertoire may be chosen:  from broadway, jazz, country, gospel and contemporary Christian songs to hymns, arias, rock and bluegrass.  By the end of the first semester, students will have a minimum of five pieces of music performed from memory.  Introductory prices available.

Piano Study - An innovative approach to the study of piano that focuses the student on repertoire, personal expression and style.  By the end of the first semester, students will have a minimum of five pieces of music performed from memory.  Included in each uniquely designed curriculum, students will practice sightreading, chording and improvisation as well as performance.  Introductory prices available.

Italian - Using Oggi In Italia as the textbook, this course gives the student the ability to comprehend and speak Italian with fluency and ease.  Creative tools are used to make learning a pleasure for everyone.  Italian culture and history are included in the course.
