Accokeek Foundation Winter Activites

All following events will be held in the Education Center at 3400 Bryan Point Road, Accokeek, MD 20607. For more information, call 301-283-2113 or visit www.accokeekfoundation.org.

Bluebird Monitoring Training
Saturday, February 23, 10 - 12 noon, FREE Volunteer Opportunity
Over the years, a great deal of natural land has been cleared for residential, industrial and agricultural development. In the process, old trees that once provided habitat to cavity-nesting birds – including the Eastern bluebird – have been cut down. The most important step that we can take to help bring back the bluebird is to provide them with suitable nesting sites. A group of volunteers will monitor the 20 nest boxes from around the site on a weekly basis (March-August).
During the Bluebird Monitor Training, volunteers will help prep the nesting boxes for this year’s bluebird inhabitants by cleaning and repairing nest boxes, and receive training on how to properly monitor the boxes throughout the season. Interested volunteers should email volunteers@accokeek.org.

Stitch n Time Textile Club
Held on the 2nd Saturday each month
1 - 4 pm
Free, Volunteer Opportunity
Stitch ‘n Time is a volunteer-based textiles club where members enjoy learning about the cultivation of fleece, dyeing of wool, and colonial textiles. Club members join Foundation staff and other textile artists to use wool from the farm’s heritage breed sheep to card, spin, and knit. The club meets monthly on the 2nd Saturday, and is open to novice and expert spinners and knitters, as well as those handy with a sewing needle or sewing machine to make costumes for our interpreters. For more information contact programs@accokeek.org.

Achievement Testing for Homeschool Students

PSAT Testing
The Stanford-10 National Achievement Test is used and recognized by educators across the United States. As a norm-referenced test, the Stanford-10 not only offers home educators information on their students' achievements, it also provides comparisons based on nationwide test results.

Find a testing location in your area.

Contents of the Stanford-10:

Grade 3: Vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, listening, social studies, math, language, science

Grades 4-12: Vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, listening, social studies, math, language, science, study skills

At Classical Conversations Testing Services, we believe that standardized testing is an important part of preparing students for college entrance exams, whether your state mandates testing or not. We take a very pragmatic attitude toward testing: the test results are not as important as the skill of test-taking, although achievement tests do provide parents with reliable data for evaluating progress in language and math
skills.
Stanford Logo clearer
We have chosen to offer the Stanford-10 National Achievement Test because most private schools accept these scores for entry, and it is great preparation for the SAT I and the ACT in high school.

Please contact your state's homeschool support group to find out if your state
requires national standardized testing, or click here to find out about your state's laws.

FONZ News- National Zoo

Carousel Debut

Baby Bear Steps

The National Zoo's sloth bear cub is growing by the day! It will be a while before the cub gains its mobility, but that doesn't stop it from trying to move around when Hana briefly leaves the den to drink or eat. Watch this clip of Hana and her cub playing!

Look at Them Go and Watch Them Grow!

Andean Bear Twins
The National Zoo's two Andean bear cubs are now over a month old!
Big as they are, it will still be at least another four to six weeks before
we’re able to give them their first veterinary exam.

Like you, we're continuing to watch the cams! Footage like this isn't just
cute and entertaining, it's also scientifically ground-breaking. As far as we
know, no human has had the chance to watch Andean bear cubs the way
we’re watching these. We're also going back to review Billie Jean's behavior
pre-birth to get a fuller understanding of her maternal behavior.

Ten Oaks Ballroom in Clarksville, MD, Howard County
Friday, May 10, 2013 from 8:00pm to Midnight
Registration Postmark Deadline: March 31, 2013
Tickets: $85 per student and $35 per chaperone

TOP SECRET - For Your Eyes Only
At the Request of Her Majesty's Secret Service, you are invited to spend
an Evening of Elegance and Intrigue at the Diamonds Are Forever Spring
Gala!

With the 50th anniversary of James Bond movies, TEA is hosting "Diamonds
are Forever", named after one of the classic James Bond movie titles. Join us
for an evening of elegance and intrigue at the posh Ten Oaks Ballroom where
dancing, fun, and games will entertain you until the strike of midnight.

A gala is just a party with a snazzier name! Come celebrate the end of another
school year with your friends at our 007 Gala! Once you walk the red carpet past
paparazzi and secret agents, your fun evening starts with DJ Spinnin' Scott, the
photobooth where you can snap photos and get them printed all night long,
007-themed games and door prizes, dancing, desserts, and a full-buffet
featuring teen favorites. A special tribute will be made to all seniors, and
homeschool alumni and their guests are invited to join the gala as their
class reunion!

Dressy clothes are the norm, but tuxedos and floor-length gowns are totally
optional. Most guys sport a jacket and tie and the girls choose a variety of
dress lengths. This is not an event that you need a "date" for, either! Guests
mix and mingle with their friends and make new ones. Seating is not pre-
assigned at the banquet tables, so everyone is free to move around
throughout the evening.

View our impressive venue here: .

Our gala photographer will take your candid and posed shots in front of a
007-themed backdrop throughout the night. Dance and play the night away
on the huge dance floor or under the stars in the enclosed courtyard. The
Ten Oaks Ballroom is very posh and upscale …. the perfect setting for this
special occasion.

Ticket Cost: $85 per student and $35 per chaperone
Chaperones: Parents are welcome to attend as chaperones at the reduced rate.

Guests: All homeschool students in grades 7 to 12 are invited. You can also
invite guests who are not homeschooled as long as they are at least 13 years
old by the date of the Gala. Homeschool alumni are also welcome to attend
and bring guests.

Dietary Restrictions: I will work with families who have students with dietary
restrictions so these families can organize a buffet selection that their children
can enjoy. Please contact me if this might apply to your child/ren so we can
make it a great night for them, too!

Smithsonian and ePals Honor Kid Inventors Day

January 17 is Kid Inventors' Day and the Smithsonian and ePals are marking the occasion by opening up voting for the "people's choice" winners of the second annual Invent It! Challenge. In almost 300 entries, Pre-K-12 students from around the globe have submitted ideas for inventions to solve real-world problems. Help boost this STEM activity by weighing in before February 4 with your picks for the best student inventions.
