Meet the Author: J. Carlton (J.C.) Sharp’s The Barns of
Southern Maryland

The year is 1634. The first European immigrants land at St.
Clements Island. The story of the birth of the state of Maryland unfolds and
the role tobacco farms played in its economic growth. Within this setting, J.C.
Sharp recounts the different types of barns that peppered Maryland’s history:
Quilt Barns, Round Barns, and Mail Pouch Tobacco Barns. Did you ever wonder why
the barns were red? Or, who opted for the Maryland Tobacco Buyout and why? What
animals were the farmer’s best friends? Join us to discover the answers to
these questions and more.

Jerdine Nolen’s Eliza’s Freedom Road: An Underground Railroad Diary

Take a close up look at one escapee’s
Underground Railroad experience. Eliza overhears the Master talk of Eliza being
traded, Eliza takes to the night. She follows the path and the words of the
farmhand Old Joe: … travel the night … sleep the day. Go East. You’re back to
the set of the sun until you come to the safe house where the candlelight
lights the window. Eliza recites the stories her mother taught her memorialized
in the quilt her mother gave her along Freedom Road from Maryland to St.
Catherine’s, Canada. Come along for the ride on Eliza’s Freedom Road.
