Evening Lecture Series

All lectures meet the 3rd Wednesday of every month
Light Refreshments (6:30 pm)
Lecture (7-8 pm)

June 19th- “Finding the Giant Squid”
Dr. Clyde Roper, National Museum of Natural History
This presentation will examine some of the myths and misconceptions about the giant squid. Then, we will discuss the reality of its biology; its distribution in the seas we sail; and its relationship with its principal predator, the mighty sperm whale. This talk will take us on expeditions in search of living giant squid into the dark, silent, deep sea with high-tech cameras, ROVs, and submersibles. Anticipate the excitement! Come along for the dives!

July 17th- “NEMESIS—A Powerful Research Tool for Marine Invasive Species.”
Dr. Paul Fofonoff and Monaca Noble, SERC
Marine invaders have infiltrated coastal waters all around the United States. Now there’s a new way to track them: NEMESIS--the National Estuarine and Marine Exotic Species Information System. NEMESIS contains detailed information on how, and when, introduced species are moved and where they have established populations. It also provides species maps showing native and introduced regions at a glance and the history of spread and bay-specific collection locations. Users can generate species lists for select bays in the lower 48 states and find references to primary research papers on a given species or region.

August 21st- “Coral Reefs”
Dr. Janna Shackeroff, NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program
Talk information TBA.
