Joan Maloof has worked with plants in every way
imaginable. She is currently creating a nonprofit to ensure that there will
always have ancient forests to visit. Her books, "Teaching the Trees:
Lessons from the Forest" and "Among the Ancients: Adventures in the
Eastern Old-Growth Forests," have touched the hearts of many tree lovers.
Her experiences in old-growth forests, and her recognition of their scarcity,
led her to create the Old-Growth Forest Network, an
organization that identifies one forest in each US county forever protected
from logging and open to the public. In this talk prepared exclusively for
SERC, Maloof will give an overview of the status of forests in this county and
explain the network she is creating.
