Wicked in Baltimore

Preparing for College Essay - Prince George's County

Essay Contest for Students Grades 6-10 in Prince George's County
Students in 6th. 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th grades who live and attend school (or are home-schooled) in Maryland's Prince George's County are invited to enter an essay contest for the chance of winning a Kindle and other prizes. Prizes will be awarded at the University System of Maryland's Way2GoMaryiand event scheduled for the students and their parents/guardians from 10 am to 1 pm Saturday, December 1, 2012, at University of Maryland University College. Winners must be present to receive prizes, which will be announced during the last half-hour of the December 1st event.

The rules are simple. Write a 200-250 word essay about why it is important to start preparing for college
BEFORE you are a high-school student. Essays must be double-spaced and submitted via e-mail
(way2gomaryland@usmd.edu with "Essay Contest" in the subject line) or mailed to: University System of
Maryland, Way2GoMaryland Essay Contest, 3300 Metzerott Road, Adelphi, MD 20783. Entries must include:
your name, your grade, the name of the city and county in which you live, and the name and location of the
school you attend.
Essays will be judged by University System of Maryland officials who will select the winning essays for middle school level (6th, 7th, 8th) and high school level (9th and 10th) on the basis of organization, correct grammar usage, and clear expression of ideas. The officials will select a first-prize winner, a second-prize winner, and a third-prize winner for each level, awarding a total of six prizes. Each first-prize winner will receive a Kindle.

Annual Waterford Fair – A Magical Place for Children

The Waterford Fair is the oldest juried crafts fair in Virginia and four-time winner Loudoun Convention & Visitors Association (Visit Loudoun) Best Event of the Year. View a video  about the fair. In addition to historic homes open for tour, 155 juried heritage craftspeople (many nationally known) provide hands-on demonstrations, entertainers provide continuous traditional music and dance, Colonial and Civil War-era militia encamp and demonstrate, and there are children's activities throughout the weekend.  The proceeds from the Fair are used to carry out the Waterford Foundation's mission of education and preservation.

Many of the artisans' demonstrations of their crafts will especially delight children, who might help make a clay pot or a candle, take a lesson from a sword-master, or be enchanted by a magician or charmed by an organ grinder, peer into a real one-room schoolhouse (used until 1957), or ride a country wagon filled with hay. It is entertainment with a purpose: the historic crafts demonstrated, the music played, the military re-enactors, and of course the setting in beautifully preserved Waterford village all bring alive the history of an early American village for children.

Perfect Pumpkin Bread

Makes 2 9"x5" loaves

• 3 cups all purpose flour, plus additional for dusting pans
• 1 teaspoon kosher salt
• 2 teaspoons baking soda
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
• 1 cup light brown sugar
• 1/2 cup dark brown sugar (you can also use a total of 1 1/2 cups light brown sugar if you don't have dark brown on hand)
• 2 cups canned pumpking (not pumpkin pie filling)
• 4 large eggs
• 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350-degrees. Spray two 9"x5" loaf pans with non-stick cooking spray, then dust lightly with flour, discarding excess. Set pans aside.

In a large bowl, combine 3 cups flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground ginger. Stir well with a whisk until combined.

In a separate bowl, combine the light brown sugar, dark brown sugar, pumpkin, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Whisk well until combined and no streaks of egg remain.

Add flour mixture to the pumpking mixture and stir well with a spatula, just until no streaks of flour remain (be sure to scrape the entire way to the bottom of the bowl). Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans. Place in the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or just until a toothpick stuck in the center comes out clean and the cakes are just beginning to pull away from the sides of the pan.

Place loaves on a cooling rack and allow to cool for 15 minutes, then remove the loaves from the pan. Enjoy!
