This documentary film explores one of the great historical tragedies of America’s aboriginal people. In 1830, eager to gain access to lands inhabited by Native Americans, President Andrew Jackson enacted the Indian Removal Act which forced the Cherokee Nation to leave their homeland and relocate. Nearly a quarter of the Cherokee Nation died during the Trail of Tears, arriving in Indian Territory with few elders and even fewer children. In partnership with the locally-based Global Film and Humanity Project, the Library's goal is to bring alternative film experiences to the residents of Prince George’s County. The evening will conclude with a facilitated discussion with local filmmaker, Andrew Millington. Refreshments will be provided.

On Thanksgiving Day Americans come together with their loved ones and enjoy time honored traditional foods like turkey and sweet potatoes, turnips, greens, and coleslaw. Reach back in your memories and I'll bet you can smell Thanksgiving Day's from your childhood. Make this year's dinner one that will be just like your Grandmother would make by serving fresh and local foods from your neighborhood family farm. Can't you just smell it cooking now?

     This coming Saturday, 11/17/12, from 9a-1p, we are having a pre-Thanksgiving vegetable sale day! Below is a list of our featured items and the prices of those items. It is very important that you let us know by e-mail response if you will be coming to purchase and how much you plan on buying. Of course, you will not be held to this; we just need an idea of how much to have picked and ready. This is especially necessary for case amounts of greens! For our CSA customers, you will be picking out individual items when you arrive. This week they will not be pre-bagged.

     If you have pre-ordered a fresh turkey from our brother, you can contact him and make arrangements to pick it up on Saturday morning as well. His number is 301-645-3685. If you have not pre-ordered you can call and do so, but he has a very limited amount left.

NEW LESSON: The "Fiscal Cliff" Our Senior Fellows, Tracey Van Dusen and Cheryl Davis, have updated C-SPAN Classroom Deliberations with a new in-depth lesson examining the looming "fiscal cliff". What should Congress and the President do about the automatic tax increases and spending cuts that will go into effect on January 1, 2013 (the “fiscal cliff")? Under current law, on January 1, 2013, a "fiscal cliff" of large spending cuts and tax increases automatically go into effect unless an agreement is met between the Republican majority in the House, the Democratic majority in the Senate, and the President, to change fiscal policies that control the federal deficit and debt. The impasse between the two parties may extend beyond the January deadline, as it involves different approaches to spending cuts and revenue increases. Learn about the positions of the two parties, the Speaker of the House, and the President, by watching C-SPAN videos, reading related articles, and using our lesson plan.
