The Cherry Blossom Photography Workshop
The Cherry Blossom Photography Workshop
The Cherry Blossom Photography Workshop is intended from beginner to advanced amateur photographers. You will get practical information, tips and techniques to enhance your skills, and guidance to find the best places for your pictures.
We have a new date due to the long winter we are experiencing: The workshop date is Saturday April 12th, from 10 AM to 5:30 PM. Each participant will receive an e-book, fully illustrated with extensive information about photographic and creative techniques. After the workshop, each participant can submit five images to receive feedback, and tips to improve the image in post-processing.
The Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C. began in 1912, when the government of Japan presented 3,000 cherry trees to the city of Washington, D.C. 3,000 trees were planted in the Tidal Basin and almost 100 of these still survive. The National Park Service announced that peak bloom (defined as when 70% of the blossoms are open) will be April 8 – 12.
Schedule:
The participants will meet at The Art Museum of the Americas at 10:00 am, for an introductory presentation where we will discuss the camera controls, modes and operation, as well as how to achieve a proper exposure. We will also work and understand light: reflected, diffused and backlight; and how to make the best use of soft light and dramatic light with deep shadows. We will do exercises using different combinations of shutter speed, lens aperture, and ISO.
From 11:00 to 1:30 we will go to the tidal Basin to practice the new learned skills.
From 1:30 to 2:30pm is free time for lunch.
From 2:30 to 3:30pm, we will have another presentation The Art Museum of the Americas. Where we will discuss how to develop the ability to preview the image before pressing the shutter button, how to use the depth of field, and how to tell a story or express an idea.
From 3:30 to 5:30pm, we will have two more hours of photography. All these new ideas will lead us explore them in the next round of images. The participants will be guided to get creative and practical tips, and to have their difficulties solved.
Each participant will receive an e-book, fully illustrated with extensive information about the camera and creative photographic techniques.
Content:
- How to use the camera manual controls to improve your images.
- How to make the best use of overcast skies and reflected light to photograph flowers.
- How to use hand made backdrops to avoid undesirable and busy backgrounds.
- How to create abstract images using colors and reflections.
- How to get an accurate white balance (the real color of a scene.)
- How to find great viewpoints when photographing architecture.
Group Size is 10-15 photographers. Workshop leader Victoria Restrepo will share ideas about fine art, nature and architecture photography. You will enjoy every second of your workshop and learn new tips and ideas to improve your technique.
The workshop will be held at the Art Museum of the Americas, a beautiful building located just steps from the Washington Monument, the White House and the Tidal Basin.
The Museum is located at: 201 18th St, Washington, DC 20006
Pricing: There is a minimum donation to the Museum of $220. It includes two instruction sessions, one e-book, and a full day of hands-on instruction in the field. Coffee and snacks at the museum. After the workshop, each participant can submit five images to receive feedback, and tips to improve the image in post-processing.

- Your camera
- A tripod
- Additional lenses and filters are optional
- A lot of passion and energy
Disclaimer: Nature schedules its blossoms according to its own rules. Historically they are around the first week of April, but I cannot guarantee full blossoms on the trees on the day of your workshop, but I do guarantee very useful tips on flower and cityscape photography and views of the beautiful Tidal Basin.
Victoria Restrepo reserves the right to photograph and film her workshops. Participants should be aware that images of them might be used for promotional purposes without remuneration.
If for any reason the workshop needs to be reschedule, the participants will be notified ahead of time, if it needs to be cancelled, participants will received a full refund.
