GFDD and FUNGLODE Mark Earth Day with Screening of Environmental Film Terra

On April 22, Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD) in partnership with the Department of Sustainable Development of the Organization of American States and the Permanent Mission of the Dominican Republic to the OAS cordially invites the audiences to celebrate Earth Day at the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington DC.
Established in 1970, Earth Day has been embraced as a time for introspection, outreach, education and awareness on the state and fate of our planet. Honouring the Earth Day provides every and each of us with a unique opportunity to find ways to change our attitude and behaviour, so as to preserve livelihood on the planet for the current and future citizens. Here, education for sustainable development is critical in order to protect and conserve, and understand that resources are not infinite in our world. In pursue of this goal, on the 2013 Earth Day, GFDD and its partners will come together to raise awareness about education for sustainability.
On this occasion, a film screening, with two more additional screenings at local bilingual schools, will take place at the Art Museum of the Americas. The program will be introduced by GFDD Executive Director Natasha Despotovic and followed by an interactive discussion with Amy Beam, founder of the Beyond the Walls Program (Children and Nature, Mother Nature’s Child), ECPA Fellow, Frank Lowenstein (Climate Adaptation Strategy Leader, Don’t Move Firewood campaign), Executive Producer of the award-winning documentary Lurking in the Trees and Juan Emilio Yanes, Executive Producer of the award-winning film Terra.
TERRA was born to transform children and youth into environmentally sustainable thinkers. It is a short 3D film that showcases the worldwide situation of global warming and environment. Terra has been used as an educational tool on sustainable development reaching out to more than 5,000 Dominican children and youth.

Earth Day Network grew out of the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970 and today works with over 22,000 partners in 192 countries to broaden, diversify and mobilize the environmental movement. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.
The Department of Sustainable Development (SEDI) is a structural unit of the Organization of American States that supports OAS member States in the design and implementation of policies, programs and projects oriented to integrate environmental priorities with poverty alleviation, and socio-economic development goals.
Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas (ECPA) was established in 2009 under the initiative of President Obama strengthen Inter-American collaboration on energy security and climate change in the Western Hemisphere. ECPA is comprised of initiatives that focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency, energy poverty, infrastructure, cleaner and more efficient use of fossil fuels, sustainable forests and land use, and climate change adaptation.
