According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. To help keep you heart healthy in February while celebrating the month of love here in the Annapolis area you'll find the opportunity to walk, sing, dance and take advantage of the free health screenings to keep your heart in check with the events listed below. Don't forget to wear your red!

February is American Heart Month
Are You Ready in Red? It's time for American Heart Month 2014!
February is American Heart Month. We encourages all women to
take charge of their heart health — today and every day! Here are some of the
latest statistics* about women's heart disease:
• 42.9 million women are currently living with some form of cardiovascular
disease (CVD).
• More than 2.6 million women have a history of
heart attack.
• 33.2% of women do not engage in leisure-time
physical activity.
• 60.2% of Caucasian women, 79.9% of
African-American women, and 78.2% of Hispanic-American women
are overweight or obese.
• Among Mexican-American women, 30.7% have cardiovascular
disease.
• Among African-American women, 48.9% have cardiovascular
disease.

Health Tips for eating for your heart
Be sure to
check with your doctor regularly.
Some
general food guidelines are:
- · Eat more fruits and vegetables. Half of your plate should be veggies.
- · When eating meat, chose more fish and chicken rather than beef and pork.
- · Eat nuts (1 oz. serving), and whole grains like oatmeal and whole wheat.
- · Eat colorful foods, avoid the whites such as white bread, white rice, white potatoes, and sugar. These are simple carbohydrates.
- · Limit fried food to only occasionally.
- · If you are overweight, getting the excess weight off is important.
- · Lowering your cholesterol is important. Getting your cholesterol to lower is often difficult when you're carrying around excess weight.

Homeschool Tax Credit Bill

Dear
TEA Families,
A
lot of families have contacted me for my thoughts on SB271, a bill
being
introduced in the Maryland Assembly that would allow state tax
credits
for homeschool expenses.
From
my perspective of advocating on behalf of homeschooling for
almost
30 years, it is very unlikely that this bill will pass, even if a
majority
of homeschool families support it. However, families should
still
make their position on the bill known to the bill’s sponsors.
Personally,
I strongly oppose this bill. Sen. Jacobs and Del. Schuh’s
intentions
are good, but a tax credit opens the door for added
regulation
of homeschooling. Families who view it only from a
financial
viewpoint miss the wider consequence of putting
homeschool
families under greater state regulation and control,
now
or in the future.
How
would a tax credit create an environment of greater regulation?
In
the minds of politicians and regulators, giving a group any kind of
financial
entitlement also allows the government to further regulate,
monitor
and assess those groups to make sure the State’s money
is
being spent in a way that the State approves of, even when it is
your
own money it is giving you. This bill could open the door to all
sorts
of mischief on the part of those who are either unfamiliar with
homeschooling/education
rights or those who are actually antagonistic
to
homeschooling and education rights.
For
example, it would seem reasonable to politicians that students
whose
families receive the tax credit should demonstrate certain
outcomes
defined by the State. And, eventually those outcomes
could
be seen as beneficial for all Maryland homeschool students
to
demonstrate, not just those whose families receive the tax credit.
Accepting
subsidies from the government will weaken and potentially
eliminate
the buffer we now enjoy between us and the State education
and
taxation agencies, and is not worth the risk of losing the ground
we
have gained over the past decades.

being

Homeschool Senate Bill - Please Read
A homeschool tax credit bill is currently
making it's way through the General Assembly. On the surface, this bill sounds
like a great idea because it wants to offer a $1,000 tax credit for homeschool
materials bought by individual families. BUT, if you read through the entire
bill you find that it also requires the State Dept of Ed to create new
homeschool regulations that will verify participation in a home instruction
program.
In other words, if
this tax credit bill passes, MSDE will be mandated by law to create new
homeschool regulations that will define who is a homeschool family and what
actually constitutes homeschooling. The potential negative effects of this bill
are huge and will effect individual homeschool families *and* umbrella groups.

Maryland homeschool families to contact Senator Nancy Jacobs at nancy.jacobs@senate.state.md.us,
the lead sponsor for SB 271, and ask that she immediately withdraw this bill.

Tax Credit - Home Instruction Expenses from the 2014 legislative agenda. As a
Maryland homeschool family, I appreciate your desire to offer tax relief to
families like mine, however, this is an unnecessary measure which I do not
support.
We are also asking
families to contact Delegate Steven Schuh at steve.schuh@house.state.md.us to
request that he immediately withdraw the identical House bill that is slated to
be introduced in the House of Delegates sometime this week.

In the event that
the Senate bill is not withdrawn, it will go to a the Senate Budget and
Taxation committee for a public hearing on Wed, Jan 29 at 1:00pm. We are asking
homeschool families to come out to Annapolis to testify against this bill - or
otherwise come out to show your support for having this bill withdrawn.
If you are planning
on testifying, you are welcome to contact me so that we can coordinate talking
points. Each person gets 3-minutes to speak and we've found in the past that it
is more effective when each person focuses on a specific talking point, rather
than trying to cover too many points in too little time.
