The National Wildlife Visitor Center is located on Powder Mill Road between the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Rt. 197.
Bird WalkWednesday, Oct. 3rd, 8:00-10:00am, Wednesday, Oct. 31st, 8:00-10:00am, Ages 16+ Search for birds in several refuge habitats on this guided hike. Field guides and binoculars are recommended. Nature Tots: Move it! Move it! Thursday, Oct. 4th 10:30-11:30am & 1:00-2:00pm Ages 3-4 Do you like to move it? Discover how animals move and why. Learn how to run, jump, wiggle or slither like your favorite animal in this interactive program for preschoolers! Patuxent Wildlife Festival Saturday, Oct. 13th, 10am – 3pm All Ages No Registration Necessary Find out about the ground breaking research being done at Patuxent! Activities include live animal displays, children’s crafts, tram tours,  research exhibits, and behind-the-scenes tours of the USGS Patuxent WildlifeResearch Center to see endangered whooping cranes, sea ducks and much more!Refreshments available for purchase. Learn why water is so important for people and wildlife! Birding 101 Saturday, Oct. 20th 9:00am-2:00pm Ages 14+ Learn to identify winter birds, what tools and equipment to use, and much more in this all day workshop designed for beginning birders! Bring a bag lunch and wear good walking shoes. Bring binoculars and field guides if feasible.

Puppet Show Tuesday, Oct. 23trd, 10:30am & 11:30am, All Ages No Registration Necessary  Who’s afraid of the little brown bat? Come find why you shouldn’t be afraid! Learn the important role bats have in our environment and get to meet the characters after the show. Show lasts about 20 minutes.

Wild about the City!Friday, Oct. 26th, 10:00-11:30am Ages 8+ Take a hike along a familiar trail with a new look! Join a guided walk on the new and improved Forests of Patuxent Discovery Hike Trail. Discover the refuge's forests, its many layers and the wildlife within. Saturday, Oct. 27th, 2:00-3:30pm Ages 8-10 Patuxent Research Refuge is often considered the green lungs of the Baltimore/DC metro area, a forested home for much wildlife in the area. Not all wildlife has the luxury of living on a wildlife refuge. Learn how some wildlife and people must share city neighborhoods in this interactive interpretive program. Nature Tots: Changing Colors Tuesday, Oct. 30th, 10:30-11:30am & 1-2pm Ages 3-4 Are the trees blushing? Why are some turning red? Introduce your preschooler to the brilliant colors and changes of the fall season through a walk, stories and a craft. |

Fall Fungi Foray Sunday, Oct.14th, 1:30-3:00pm Ages 8+ Are you "lichen" fungi? Discover the beauty, diversity and biology of fungi on the refuge in this informative identification hike.  Fall Foliage Walk Saturday, Oct. 27th 9:00-11:00am All Ages Join a refuge ranger to learn about the changes taking place within the refuge forest trees and enjoy the vibrant fall colors on this nature hike for all ages |
Saturday, October 20, 10 am-4 pm (rain or shine) Celebrate Native American culture and heritage featuring: traditional and contemporary music, drumming, singing, dancing, regalia, interactive exhibits and demonstrations, Indian games, arts and crafts, archery, Native horsemanship and bareback riding demos, living history reenactment of primitive life skills, storytelling, and live birds of prey. Nominal fees for traditional foods and other favorites, vendor sales, basket craft, and horseback riding, and raffle ticket sales for multiple items including a collectible “Turtle” Pendleton Blanket, and a Native style flute. Cost: FREE admission & parking (Most activities are free.)
