International Observe the Moon Night

 Please join us for International Observe the Moon Night on September 22, 2012
 from 7-10 pm at the Goddard Space Flight Center Visitor Center.  No
 registration is required for this free event.  Learn more about Earth¹s
 closest neighbor while engaging in hands-on activities, facility tours,
 chatting with scientists and engineers, and viewing the Moon through
 telescopes.

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center is physically located at 8800 Greenbelt Rd., Greenbelt, Md., 20771. The Goddard Visitor Center is located off ICESat Road (formerly Soil Conservation Road). Once on ICESat Road, turn left into the Visitor Center prior to the security checkpoint.

Instrumental Music Program

Dear Parent,
There are still spaces available for the fall semester of The Sounding Good Music Program!  

After completing our first successful year, we are ready to resume the program at a new location.  

The Orientation/General Interest Meeting will be held Thursday, September 6, 5:30 pm-6:30 pm, at the Outreach Christian Center, located at 6701 Clinton Manor Drive, Clinton, MD 20735. Meet our Director and staff and learn more about this exciting program!  Space is limited, so please call 301-856-1508 as soon as possible!  (Leave your contact information so that we may let you know if seating is still available.)

Beginners will meet Mondays, starting September 10, 5:30 pm—6:30 pm.  

Intermediates/Advanced students will meet Thursdays beginning September 13, 5:30 pm—6:30 pm.  

The cost is $55/month for the first student, with a discount for siblings.   Instrument rental or purchase is not provided.  If you need assistance locating an instrument for your child, please call us at 301-856-1508.  If your child already has an instrument, please have him/her bring it the first day of class.  The Director will conduct an overall assessment related to the teaching areas in the Music Instruction Plan.

IGES Art Contest; grades 2-4

Announcing the 2012 IGES Art Contest Grades 2-4   Entries due November 5, 2012  The world's a place of living things, From bees to frogs to birds with wings. Some live in cold places, some swim in reefs, And don't forget some have many a leaf! The world's a place of living things, With dots and stripes and lots of rings. With all this variety we'd like to remind Every species is one of a kind. This year, we're inviting young scientists and artists to explore biodiversity! There are many different types of life on Earth -- from bacteria to insects to plants and animals. This biodiversity extends across species and individuals. We encourage students to learn about the forms of life in a particular place. Have them explore what can be seen, what types of life are hard to see, and how those lifeforms interact with one another. Biodiversity is everywhere! Students should investigate, then draw a picture showing what they have learned. Remember to submit completed art pieces to the 2012 IGES art contest! "The World's a Place of Living Things" is the 17th annual art contest held by the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Arlington, VA. The contest supports national education standards for grades K-4.   The first-, second-, and third-place artists will receive $100, $75, and $50 Visa gift cards, respectively, framed color certificates and their artwork will be showcased on IGES's website. Welcome to the Bill Pickett Rodeo - Rodeo For Kidz Sake Program 2012! We are proud and excited in announcing that the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo will be held once again at the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD on September 21/22, 2012. We hope that you will be participating and will earmark the date for your students as one of their first educational based field trips and areas of study for the upcoming school year 2012-2013.

Once again we or offering a very special educational based program for school kids (upper elementary and middle school grades) and we cordially invite you and your students to attend. Our special "Rodeo For Kidz Sake" program is scheduled for September 21st, 2012 at 10:00 am (Prince George's County Show Place Arena), Upper Marlboro, MD 20772; Please Mark Your Calendars Now & Make Reservations ASAP. This is a special school program in which many of your local public, private and charter schools attend each year. This year, we expect higher than usual attendance so we encourage you to make your student, staff and transportation reservations as soon as possible.

In order to assist your staff in preparation for this special event, we will be providing you with a "Rodeo Activity Booklet" which can be used in the classroom or as a homework learning tool. In the booklet, teachers will find activities aligned with Maryland Common Core State Standards. These activities will help with introducing students to the subjects of the rodeo and its African American West history. The Activity Booklet was developed by the staff of the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo Association and will be supplied to your school systems upon reservation(s) or request.

College of Southern Maryland Kids and Teen College

Fall 2012 registration -  is now available

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) believes in nurturing children's potential year round. Kids’ College at the College of Southern Maryland continues with its tradition of offering comprehensive exciting youth programming for children ages five to 17 years old. It allows for the opportunity to explore their interests on a college campus while discovering themselves.

Classes are offered at the college campuses in Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties. These half-day programs allow kids and teens to design their own week’s specific to their interests-from art in the morning to academics in afternoons or a full day of sports.
