Sept. 3, 1783:The handwritten Treaty of Paris is signed in France, formally ending the Revolutionary War (1775-83).
Dec. 23, 1783: Commander-in-Chief General George Washington resigns from the Army before Congress in Annapolis, MD.
The Treaty of Paris Period (1783-87): The Bridge between the Revolution and the Constitution
Sept. 3, 1783:The handwritten Treaty of Paris is signed in France, formally ending the Revolutionary War (1775-83).
Dec. 23, 1783: Commander-in-Chief General George Washington resigns from the Army before Congress in Annapolis, MD.
Jan. 14, 1784: The Treaty of Paris is ratified by Congress through a typed Proclamation that is signed by President Thomas Mifflin in Annapolis.
1784-86: Mann's Tavern in Annapolis hosts 1) Washington's resignation ball, 2) the first meeting between Maryland and Virginia that led to the Mount Vernon Compact in 1785 and 3) the 1786 Annapolis Convention.
1786-87: Shays' Rebellion, which starts just before the 1786 Annapolis Convention, highlights the need for a new Constitution.
1787: George Washington comes out of retirement to preside over the Constitutional Convention at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, PA. The Constitution takes effect in 1789.Cyrus Griffin is the last of "America's 14 Forgotten Presidents of Congress" before Washington to serve.
