1. Please remember to stop by the Visitor Center to see
the Hollingsworth Art Gallery's featured September artist Wayne Bierbaum
and Southern Comforters (quilting
exhibit),will be featured in October.

2. Join the Maryland Beekeepers Association for the
September Honey Harvest Festival event on Saturday, September 20th from 9am-3pm
at the National Wildlife Visitor Center.
Discover the busy world of bees and other pollinators while enjoying
arts and crafts, honey tastings, candle making demonstrations, product sales,
and much more! Refreshments will be
available for purchase. No Registration Necessary!
3. Remember the Special Presentation Aldo Leopold-A
Standard of Change on September 27th at the National Wildlife Visitor

4. Schedule Change: Season Ends Early for Patuxent Tram
Tours. September 30th will be the last
day for shuttle tours in 2014.
5. Hunting is now in session and may be occurring in
various areas throughout the refuge this fall season through January 31st. Make
sure to stay on marked trails at all times and find out about closed areas when
visiting.
6. To register for
a program at Patuxent:
All programs are FREE, however, donations to The Friends
of Patuxent are greatly appreciated!
Note: These public programs are designed for individuals/families. Programs DO require advance reservations and
may be subject to changes or cancellation due to weather or low participation.

Programs held at the North Tract
The North Tract is located on Rt. 198 between the
Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Rt. 32.
*Hybrid Oak Hunt*
*Saturday, Oct. 4th, 10:00am-12:00pm, **Ages 14+*
Hybrid oaks? Native Oaks? Discover how to tell them apart
and how it happens! Take a guided tour
and travel to various locations to learn about the oak species found on the
refuge. See how many hybrid oaks you can find!

Search for birds in several refuge habitats on this
guided hike. Field guides and binoculars
are recommended. Registration is
required.
*Night Hike*
*Sunday, Oct 26th, 5:45-7:15pm, Ages 5+*
Discover the nighttime world of the refuge as you look
and listen for nocturnal animals on this guided walk. Registration is required.
Programs Held at the National Wildlife Visitor Center
The Visitor Center is located on Powder Mill Road between
the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and Rt. 197.
*Hidden Herps*
*Saturday, Oct. 4th, 1:00-2:30 pm, Ages 8-10*
Ever wonder what happens to all the frogs, toads and
turtles you have seen all summer?
Discover the mysterious and undercover world of herps with a hike,
experiment and more in this hands-on program.

*Nature Tots: Changing Colors*
*Tuesday, Oct. 7th, 10:30-11:30am & 1:00-2:00pm, Ages
3-4*
Are the trees blushing? Why are some turning red?
Introduce your preschooler to the brilliant colors and changes of the fall
season through a walk, crafts and a game. Registration is required.

*Whooping Crane Observatory Tour*
*Sunday, Oct. 12th, 1:00-2:30pm, Ages 14+*
Enjoy a guided tour to the Whooping Crane Observatory at
the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center to observe a pair of graceful and
endangered adult whooping cranes. Find out more about the Whooping Crane
population recovery program. Arrive early, as tour will leave on time. Space is very limited. Registration is
required.

It's almost Halloween so introduce your preschooler to
our flying mammal friend, the bat, through stories, songs, and finger plays.

Find out about the ground breaking research being done at
Patuxent!
Activities include
live animal displays, children’s crafts, shuttle tours, research exhibits, and
behind-the-scenes tours of the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center to see
endangered whooping cranes and much more!
Refreshments are
available for purchase. Tours are limited; tickets are available first come
first serve on the day of the event.

Identify birds by sight and sound on this guided tour
with short walks through several refuge habitats. Field guides and binoculars are
recommended. Registration is required.
*Fall in Love with Autumn*
*Saturday, Oct. 25th, 2:00-3:30pm, All Ages* Explore the
forests in this fall-themed nature hike for the whole family.
Discover the changes taking place in the leaves, fall
wildflowers and the animals as autumn arrives. Registration is required.
*Puppet Show: Who’s Afraid of the Little Brown Bat*
*Tuesday, Oct. 28th, 10:00am & 11:00am, All Ages*
Who’s afraid of the little brown bat? Come find why you shouldn’t be afraid! Learn the important role bats have in our
environment and get to meet the characters after the show. Program is approximately 20 minutes. No registration necessary.
