Schubert Singers - Concert Choir Auditions
Schubert Singers
Schubert Singers, a concert choir
for children in Southern Maryland, is open by audition in the fall and spring to boys and girls entering
kindergarten and above who like to sing beautiful music. The singers learn and perform folk songs,
spirituals, rounds, and music by classical and contemporary composers that is
especially suited to the young voice.
They are taught how to sing with a lovely tone, to read music, and to
work together to create musical beauty.
The directors believe that singing and making music are very important
to the human spirit, that the acts of singing and making music enrich the life
of the mind and strengthen its capabilities, and that collaborative
music-making can serve as a vehicle for goodwill and peace among peoples of the
world!
Schubert Singers is an offering of Friendship Landing Center
for the Arts,
directed by Alicia Cordelle.
Auditions and Voice Placement
will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 on Tuesday, August 20, at St. Paul's, Piney
Parish, 4535 Piney Church Rd., Waldorf, MD 20602. Interested singers may register by contacting Angela
Garvey at 301.934.2360 or schubertsingers@gmail.com. Singers will
be asked to sing a simple song and match pitches. Singers may sing with a friend if they
wish. Those making successful auditions
will rehearse beginning on Tuesday, September 3, 2013, in preparation for winter
concerts in December and January. The
cost is $50 per child, with additional children in the same family at $35.

America is a story that
is being written everyday in the lives of its people. What is the story? And
what do we learn from it?
In conjunction with the
exhibition, I Want the Wide American Earth: An Asian Pacific American
Story, currently on view at the National Museum of American
History, the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center presents “Fighting
for Democracy: Who is the ‘We in ‘We the People’?” This compelling stage
performance created by the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia and
produced collaboratively with Philadelphia’s premier theater artists, explores
the themes of civil rights and democracy through the perspectives of seven
diverse individuals whose lives and communities were forever changed by World
War II. Fighting for Democracy reveals how World War II was a pivotal
time in developing a broader understanding of our nation and its people.
Each 35-minute
performance will include a post-show discussion with the audience and artists.

The Annapolis Maritime Museum seeks to connect the richness of the maritime heritage of the Annapolis area with our local youth and adults. The Museum operates from a waterside campus on the shores of Back Creek, with unequaled views of Annapolis Harbor and the Chesapeake Bay.
The Museum campus is the site of the last remaining oyster packing plant in the area, the McNasby's Oyster Packing Company. The McNasby building was severely damaged by Hurricane Isabel in 2003, but has been restored, thanks to community support, as the Bay Experience Center -- an interactive facility like no other. It is now home to our signature exhibit, "Oysters on the Half Shell." Programming, such as our popular summer concert series and winter lecture series, continues.
The Museum's activities have grown through the years with community support and sheer determination, first in our other campus building, the 650 square-foot Barge House, restored through volunteer efforts and in-kind donations, and now in the McNasby building. The Museum is host tomeetings, community events, lectures, concerts, and children's educational activities. It is the launching point for the Museum's tours tothe iconic Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse -- the most famous symbol of the upper Chesapeake Bay.
With a great deal of community support, the Museum has continued to do great things -- full steam ahead! We have accomplished much and there are big plans in the offing.Join us. Participate in history and in keeping history alive.
Vocabulary Cartoons II: SAT Word Power
Vocabulary Cartoons II: SAT Word Power
by Sam Burchers, and Bryan E. Burchersis a great way to have middle and high schoolers learn vocabulary for the SAT. This book is the second in the series. The format is one word per page. Each word is defined and linked to a more familiar word or concept. Then they draw a crazy cartoon including the vocabulary word and link word. The caption is a sentence also using both words. It is very witty and really creates a connection to help kids remember the vocabulary words. Look for it in your local library or book store.
