Welcome to the world of Colonial Maryland!
Colonial Adventures  offers children the opportunity to spend part of their summer experiencing colonial life in a hands-on, experience-based environment. If this sounds like just another school field trip with tours and lectures, think again. Your child will live the colonial life dressing in period clothing, hearth cooking their own lunch, learning colonial crafts (including making leather journals, writing with quill pens and more), and playing colonial games and throwing tomahawks. They will also learn to be a spy and send coded messages, and even become a pirate for a day-- acquiring a pirate name, searching for buried treasure, and terrorizing the Chesapeake Bay! Through a wide variety of hands-on and experience-based activities they won't realize they are learning, they'll just think they're having fun!

Clothing

Kids will be totally immersed in colonial life. To help with this, each will be given a set of colonial clothes to wear for the week. They will truly look and feel the part.

tomahawk girlActivities
These are just some of the activities that will be available:
  • Arts and Crafts activities will include making Sweet Bags, journals and coil pots, and writing with quill pens and much, much more!
  • Hearth Cooking will include baking bread, making Hoe Cakes, cooking a full colonial meal and making ice cream.
  • Throughout the week your child will master games such as The Captain's Coming!, Capture the Flag, Nine Mens' Morris, Here There Be Sea Monsters and so much more.
  • Your child will have the opportunity to practice such colonial skills as Tomahawk Throwing, creating/decoding Cipher Codes, Riddles, Weaving and Rope Making.

Special Themes:

Pirate Day!
Arrrrgh! For a day, your kids will live the life of a pirate on the Chesapeake Bay! After acquiring a new pirate name they will learn to talk like a pirate, hunt for buried treasure, make a treasure map of their own and learn about what it took to be a successful pirate. There may be eye-patches, peg-legs and parrots involved. Shiver me timbers! A fun day this will be, me hearties!

Colonial Espionage
Did you know that during the Revolutionary War both sides used female spies? Learn about spies and the methods they used to send secret coded messages.

Optional Overnight
For the more adventurous, there will be the option to stay overnight in one of our historic buildings for campers aged 10 and up. We'll explore the site, play games, sing songs, tell stories, and sleep in a colonial style building. An additional $50  fee will be required.

Cardiac Health Tips for eating for your heart
Be sure to check with your doctor regularly.
Some general food guidelines are:
  • ·       Eat more fruits and vegetables. Half of your plate should be veggies.
  • ·       When eating meat,  chose more fish and chicken rather than beef and pork.
  • ·       Eat  nuts (1 oz. serving), and whole grains like oatmeal and whole wheat.
  • ·       Eat colorful foods, avoid the whites such as white bread, white rice, white potatoes, and sugar. These are simple carbohydrates.
  • ·       Limit  fried food  to only occasionally.
  • ·       If you are overweight, getting the excess weight off is important.
  • ·       Lowering your cholesterol is important. Getting your cholesterol to lower is often difficult when you're carrying around excess weight.
