Out of the misty veil of Russian folklore comes the classic tale of palaces and promises. A beastly prince learns to live outside himself and discover courage, companionship, trust, and love in the heart of a merchant's daughter. The grandeur of Czarist Russia provides the design style for both the scenery and the elegant half life-size marionettes. Oct. 12-Nov. 16

Wicked in Baltimore

Wicked Baltimore | Hippodrome Theatre

After mesmerizing audiences all around the world, including Broadway fans, the Tony Award winning theatrical masterpiece ‘Wicked’ returns to Baltimore for a five-week run at the Hippodrome Theatre of the France-Merrick Performing Arts Center from October 3 to November 4, 2012.
Hailed by The New York Times as “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster”, ‘Wicked’ is a fascinating musical that takes audiences back in time in the wonderful world of Munchkinland long before Dorothy came in the picture, back in time when the Witches of Oz were just a couple of young girls who grew up together but whose striking differences in personality, perspectives and appearances pulled them apart as they realized and fulfilled their wicked destinies. Their journey, transformation and the adventures and drama they shared greatly shape “the most complete – and completely satisfying – new musical in a long time” (USA Today).

Hippodrome Theatre,
12 North Eutaw Street,
Baltimore, MD

See website for show times and to purchase tickets. $35-$145.

Annual Waterford Fair – A Magical Place for Children

Annual Waterford Fair – A Magical Place for Children

The Waterford Fair is the oldest juried crafts fair in Virginia and four-time winner Loudoun Convention & Visitors Association (Visit Loudoun) Best Event of the Year. View a video  about the fair. In addition to historic homes open for tour, 155 juried heritage craftspeople (many nationally known) provide hands-on demonstrations, entertainers provide continuous traditional music and dance, Colonial and Civil War-era militia encamp and demonstrate, and there are children's activities throughout the weekend.  The proceeds from the Fair are used to carry out the Waterford Foundation's mission of education and preservation.

Many of the artisans' demonstrations of their crafts will especially delight children, who might help make a clay pot or a candle, take a lesson from a sword-master, or be enchanted by a magician or charmed by an organ grinder, peer into a real one-room schoolhouse (used until 1957), or ride a country wagon filled with hay. It is entertainment with a purpose: the historic crafts demonstrated, the music played, the military re-enactors, and of course the setting in beautifully preserved Waterford village all bring alive the history of an early American village for children.

Perfect Pumpkin Bread

Baked Pumpkin Bread
Makes 2 9"x5" loaves
  • 3 cups all purpose flour, plus additional for dusting pans
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup dark brown sugar (you can also use a total of 1 1/2 cups light brown sugar if you don't have dark brown on hand)
  • 2 cups canned pumpking (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 12 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Preheat oven to 350-degrees. Spray two 9"x5" loaf pans with non-stick cooking spray, then dust lightly with flour, discarding excess. Set pans aside.
In a large bowl, combine 3 cups flour, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground ginger. Stir well with a whisk until combined.
In a separate bowl, combine the light brown sugar, dark brown sugar, pumpkin, eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Whisk well until combined and no streaks of egg remain.
Add flour mixture to the pumpking mixture and stir well with a spatula, just until no streaks of flour remain (be sure to scrape the entire way to the bottom of the bowl). Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared pans. Place in the oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or just until a toothpick stuck in the center comes out clean and the cakes are just beginning to pull away from the sides of the pan.
Place loaves on a cooling rack and allow to cool for 15 minutes, then remove the loaves from the pan. Enjoy!
